Becoming a “Godmother” in Alicante, Spain!

I had a very special flying visit to Alicante in Spain where the wonderful people at The Tambre Group call me the “godmother” of their clinics!

I was there for the grand opening of Tambre Alicante, the new fertility clinic of the Tambre Group, which is already an international benchmark in advanced reproductive medicine.

Housed in a former cinema in a redevelopment alongside the harbour the new clinic is striking to walk around and is already attracting patients from all over the world in search of personalised treatments and cutting-edge technology.

The whole day was full of excitement. It began with a press conference which I attended along with the Group’s CEO, Inge Kormelink, the doctor and medical director, Laura García de Miguel, and the medical coordinator in Alicante, Dr Abraham Zavala.

Later in the day there was an opening ceremony attended by more than 300 guests, including local authorities, representatives from the healthcare sector, international fertility experts, collaborators and the media.

Since its foundation in Madrid in 1978, Clínica Tambre has accompanied thousands of patients on their journey to motherhood and fatherhood. Now, with the opening of the Panoramis Life & Business Centre complex, Tambre is expanding its presence with a fertility clinic in Alicante that combines almost five decades of experience with the most advanced technologies in the sector.

CEO, Inge Kormelink, told the media: “Today we are celebrating the opening of Tambre Alicante, a strategic location for continued growth. Alicante is an open, bright and well-connected city, ideal for local and international patients.

“The clinic was created with the aim of becoming a centre of excellence in Europe, specialising in complex cases such as implantation failure, recurrent miscarriage, low ovarian reserve, endometriosis, genetic disorders and severe male factors.”

Dr Laura García de Miguel, medical director of the Group, explained the objective of the medical and human team at Tambre when a woman or couple comes in search of fertility treatment:

She said: “Our goal is to achieve pregnancy in the shortest time possible, always with personalised treatments based on the most advanced technology.”

Everyone at the clinic stressed that technology must go hand-in-hand with the human touch. Staff there speak Spanish, English, French, German,. Italian and Dutch, enabling them to deal sensitively with patients, who come from over 100 different countries.

One of the great challenges in assisted reproduction is the delay in motherhood. In Spain, the average age for having the first child is over 32, and more than 10% of births are to mothers over 40.

This poses a challenge for specialists and means that more and more patients are turning to in vitro fertilisation, egg donation or egg vitrification as options to fulfil their desire to become mothers and fathers.

Tambre Alicante was created to respond to these social realities with an approach based on innovation, personalisation and close support.

As well as its medical dimension, Tambre Alicante will also have a positive impact on the city. It is estimated that it will generate skilled employment in areas such as gynaecology, embryology, psychology, nursing and clinical support, reaching 250 professionals by 2030.

Likewise, its role as a fertility clinic in Alicante will attract hundreds of international patients, boosting related sectors such as hospitality, transport and health tourism.
